India-administered Kashmir: On Thursday, Indian security forces in Jammu & Kashmir killed two militants belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen group in an encounter in Handwara. One of the slain militants has been identified as Manan Wani, a PhD scholar turned militant. He hailed from Lolab, Kupwara and did his PhD from Aligarh Muslim University.

The gunfight broke out after a joint team of army’s 30 RR and SOG cordoned off Shatgund Balla area during wee hours today.

Soon after the news about the death of two militants, violent clashes erupted in parts of Kupwara and Handwara.

Earlier, the authorities closed all educational institutions in the frontier district and snapped internet services in parts of Handwara and Kupwara.

The second militant killed in the encounter has been identified as Ashiq Hussain Zargar, resident of Tulwari in Langate.
