Egypt

Egypt: At least eight Egyptian police officers were killed in a militant attack on security checkpoints in the northern Sinai peninsula, the Egyptian interior ministry said on Wednesday.

Five militants were also killed in the ensuing exchange of fire, while others escaped and were being pursued security forces, according to a statement.

The attack took place west of the city of El-Arish, as local people celebrated the Islamic festival of Eid al-Fitr.

Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

IS claim for the attack

A claim published by its Amaq news agency said militants killed 10 police officers in two simultaneous attacks on checkpoints near El-Arish.

Egyptian state media meanwhile broadcast photographs purportedly showing the bodies of several of the attackers.

Egyptian Ministry of Interior said in a press statement on early Thursday that Egyptian security forces managed to locate the suspects involved in Arish checkpoint attack on Wednesday.

The statement said that the security forces traced the perpetrators and found them residing in an abandoned house in a wasteland near Arish police station. The terrorists opened fire once they found out they are under siege by security forces.

The fire exchange left 14 terrorists killed, and 14 machine guns, 3 detonators, and explosive belts were confiscated.

Egyptian Interior Ministry statement

Photos from the attack sites that surfaced on social media showed significant level of destruction.

An IS affiliate called Sinai Province has killed hundreds of security personnel in attacks since the military overthrew Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.
